Men’s Mental Health Week 15th – 21st June

Men’s Mental Health Week highlights the health issues that affect men, encourages greater awareness of potential concerns, and signposts ways to seek support. Running from 15th to 21st June, this year’s theme focuses on small, manageable actions that can lead to lasting change. By reducing the stigma around men’s health, we can help empower men to take responsibility for their wellbeing and ask for help when they need it.

Many men find it difficult to ask for help and this is why it is important to talk more openly about men’s health and encourage men to speak up when they are struggling.

Suicide remains the biggest cause of death for men under 35, with rates also rising among men aged 34 to 64. Behind these statistics are real people: fathers, sons, brothers, partners, friends and colleagues. More open conversations about health could help more men feel able to reach out, share their concerns and get support sooner.

Support can take many forms, and sometimes the most important thing is simply being there and listening. Many men find it easier to open up when someone else starts the conversation. Here are a few ways you can support the men in your life, whether for yourself or someone else:

·        Check in and ask how they are

·        Listen without judgement

·        Encourage them to seek support when needed

·        Normalise conversations about health and wellbeing

·        Support healthier habits, such as being active together or sharing nutritious meals

You do not need to have all the answers. Creating a supportive space where the men in your life feel comfortable opening up can make a real difference.
