With over 700,000 deaths to suicide each year globally suicide prevention organisations are looking to change the narrative on suicide. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support.
We at Elysium Memorial Foundation are obviously keen to reduce veteran suicides and signpost those that are seeking help to the right organisations through our website, however civilian suicide is also extremely high with the cost of living rises and Christmas on the horizon the strain on people’s mental health is exacerbated.
For both military and civilian the first and bravest step is to ask for help, there are a range of organisations out there for young adults, children, adults, serving military, veterans, men, women and the LGBQT+ community. If you think someone is struggling reach out to an organisation and see what you can do to help. Sometimes the first step to helping is as simple as listening.
