Papyrus - A sad loss of resources

We are very sad to see that Papyrus, a charity that has been helping young people with suicide prevention has gone into administration.
Papyrus has been running for nearly 30 years and in that time helped hundreds of young people through their HOPELINE24/7 and support. The closure highlights what many charities are facing in this financial climate and that is lack of funding.
Despite Papyrus being on the receiving end of NHS referrals there is no government funding for small, grass roots charities that bridge the gap between the NHS referrals and available, timely services.
The closure of Papyrus leaves a large gap in the suicide prevention charity support, especially for young people.
If you know a young person who is struggling there are still options available
Samaritans – call 116 123 (free, 24/7)
Shout – text SHOUT to 85258 (free, 24/7)
NHS 111 – for urgent mental health support
In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E
It is not only a sad time for those that have relied on the services offered by Papyrus but also for the Trustees, workers, volunteers and all involved in running the charity. For them it must be devastating to no longer be able to help those in need. Let us hope that they come back bigger and stronger though we fear that the lack of support to small essential charities is not going to improve and more may fall by the wayside.
